The text “BCS OUTLAWS” on a maroon rectangle sits beneath a team photo. A collage of photos on either side: Hillary Oswald kneels while holding up a ball she fielded. Justin Romack stretches forward on his knees to field a ball. Alex Quick runs through the blue pillar base. Crystal Stark runs towards Abigail Junek as she kneels holding a ball high above her head.

About the BCS Outlaws

Founded in 2013, the BCS Outlaws are a team of blind and visually impaired athletes who compete as a local affiliate of the National Beep Baseball Association. The Outlaws are one of several dozen teams from across the United States, with other teams represented in Taiwan and the Dominican Republic. In 2019, the Outlaws placed 8th in the nation and, through grit, strategy and determination, look to rise toward the top of the standings for the 2025 season.

Beep Baseball is an adaptive form of America’s favorite pastime. Played by people with visual impairments, there are key adaptations to the sport. The bases buzz to let the batter know where to run, the ball beeps so the defense can find it and the pitcher is on the same team as the batter and catcher. Everyone aside from the pitcher and catcher are blindfolded to even the playing field.

What makes beep baseball so important to our players?

This team means more than I originally thought it would to me. Getting into the sport I thought it would just be another fun hobby, but it turned into a family. I also gained skills I was not expecting to, such as communication, teamwork, and building confidence on the field, which truly translates to confidence off the field. It also allowed me to compete, and win at an athletic level.” – Alex #5

Growing up, I played lots of different sports. Once I started losing significant amounts of my vision, I felt like I couldn’t compete in sports at a high level anymore. Beep baseball and this team have given me that opportunity to compete in the highest level of competition, while building life-long friendships. For the first time in my life, my vision hasn’t hindered me from athletics, but it actually qualifies me to play!” – Hillary #12
